Blu Signs To Sire/Warner Brothers Records

This weekend it was announced that 2007 and 2008 HipHopDX Award-winner Blu has signed with Sire Records, a division of Warner Brothers.

In a blog piece featured in the Los Angeles Times online section, the local rapper said of his rise to national acclaim, "I’m not going to save Hip Hop. Hip Hop is safe. There’s a lot of [factors] trying to bring Hip Hop down. Hip Hop is a reflection of the world now. It’s not just Harlem. I’ll continue to live my life and make music and continue to be an inspiration."

Blu's manager and publicist, Jonathan Kim, added, "This is one step further to where we would like to see Blu’s career end up."

In 2007, Blu released Below The Heavens with producer Exile on Sound In Color Records. Last year, two joint efforts, The Piece Talks as C.R.A.C. with Ta'raach as well as the self-titled Mainframe collaboration as Johnson & Jonson were released on Tres.

Late last year, it was rumored that the 25 year-old emcee and producer, once approached by Suge Knight to sign with Death Row, was being courted by labels ranging from Warner to Duck Down.

Blu's major label debut is said to be arriving this fall.

Suge Knight Pleads Guilty To Assaulting Girlfriend

Suge Knight made it into the headlines again today after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge for allegedly beating his girlfriend last year.

The Associated Press reports that Knight copped a plea on Tuesday (Feb. 17) in Las Vegas Justice Court, which in turn got two felony drug charges and one felony coercion charge tossed out.

Reportedly the former Death Row Records exec hit Melissa Issac in August of last year. Police say they witnessed Knight assault her while he was holding a knife. When searched authorities then found out that he was carrying Ecstasy and hydrocodone.

Along with a $340 fine, Suge was ordered to receive counseling. He is scheduled to return to court in August.

MC Hammer to star in A&E reality series, "Hammertime"

A&E has picked up a new series starring '90s rapper MC Hammer.

The performer, his wife and five children will be the focus of a half-hour, 11-episode reality series set to premiere this year.

The title, naturally, is "Hammertime."

Executive producer J.D. Roth said the show likely will play similar to an unscripted version of the Huxtable family from "The Cosby Show."

"Here's a dad with five kids, married to the same woman for more than 23 years, living in the same place where he grew up and going to church every Sunday," Roth said. "He's had his ups and downs, and it's what makes him such a character you root for."

Hammer had a spectacular rise and fall in the early 1990s, becoming a household name and selling millions of records before falling into debt and bankruptcy because of overspending on a lavish lifestyle. Hammer "now lives a more economically balanced life," according to the show's press materials, as a "new-age dad" in Oakland, Calif. This month, he appeared with Ed McMahon in a Cash4Gold Super Bowl ad.

Suge Knight Beat Down -- Again!!!

For the second time in 9 months, Suge Knight got his face punched in -- and the alleged ass-beater claims to be Akon's business manager.

It all went down in a private party at the W Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ -- where Suge was attending a private party for NBA All-Star weekend. Cops say they were called to the scene by hotel security who warned about a brewing fight between two groups in the VIP area.

According to the Scottsdale PD website, when cops arrived, they saw a man punch the victim -- aka Suge -- two times in the head." Officers had to break out the tasers to "quell the fight."

The suspect, Robert Carnes Jr., was charged with one count of felony aggravated assault -- they ruled it a felony "due to the severity of the victim's injuries." Another man was also arrested and charged with one count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

According to the Scottsdale PD, "Carnes reported to officers that he is employed as the business manager for singer 'Akon.'"

Suge was transported to a local hospital and treated for facial injuries.

Lil Kim Added To "Dancing With The Stars"

After a tumultuous start to the year that has seen her engaged in a war of words with Faith Evans and Voletta Wallace [click to read], Lil Kim has joined the cast of ABC's "Dancing With The Stars." The "Queen Bee" will be the first female Hip Hop artist, and the second emcee in the show's history following No Limit's Master P.

Despite a diminished profile after her 2005 prison stint, a murder that occurred at her thirty third birthday and the recent Notorious fiasco, the appearance is a continuance of milestones for the Brooklyn-bred rapper/actor.

Kim also holds the distinction of being one of only three female rappers with a #1 Billboard hit (2001's "Lady Marmalade"). Former NFL star Warren Sapp, Folk singer Jewel, actor/comedian David Alan Grier and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak will also appear on this season's installment of the popular show. The eighth season of "Dancing With The Stars" premiers March 9 at 8:00 p.m. EST.

BREAKING NEWS: Snoop Dogg and Interscope Part Ways

After many years and many hits, Snoop Dogg and long time recording company Interscope/Geffen Records have parted ways, according to Chronic Vacation.

As of press time, no details were available on the split

Founded by Jimmy Iovine in 1990, Snoop Dogg immediately became one of the major players at the label through his affiliation with Death Row Records. The first major release from the pairing was The Chronic from Dr. Dre, whose lead single, the Snoop Dogg assisted “Ain’t Nothin But A G Thang” helped propel the album to multiplatinum status.

Snoop Dogg’s own debut album, 1993’s Doggystyle followed in The Chronic’s footsteps and was certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA.

In 1998, Snoop Dogg parted ways with Death Row/Interscope and Snoop spent the ensuing years with Master P’s No Limit Records and later hit the independent circuit, releasing mix tapes and albums with long time collaborators, Tha Dogg Pound.

The new millennium saw the Dogg return to Interscope under Geffen Records where he released three albums.

There is no word on what Snoop’s next move will be, but reliable sources say the split will lead to bigger and better things for the Dogg Father.
